Common questions about % w/v

What does 1% w/v mean?+

It means 1 gram of solute in 100 mL of final solution. The volume refers to the complete solution, not 100 mL of solvent added to the solute.

How do I convert % w/v to mg/mL?+

Multiply the numerical percentage by 10 to get mg/mL. For example, 0.9% w/v is 9 mg/mL, and 1% w/v is 10 mg/mL. Divide mg/mL by 10 to convert back to % w/v.

What is the difference between w/v and w/w?+

Weight/volume percentage uses grams of solute per 100 mL of final solution. Weight/weight percentage uses grams of solute per 100 g of final solution. They are not interchangeable; converting between them requires the solution density.

CALCULATION GUIDE

Understand your calculation

Clear inputs, a practical example and the context you need to interpret your result.

How it works

Percent w/v means grams of solute in 100 mL of final solution. Find concentration using % w/v = mass (g) ÷ final volume (mL) × 100. To find required mass, use mass (g) = target % w/v × final volume (mL) ÷ 100.

Inputs and units

Choose a calculation mode. Enter a nonnegative solute mass or target percentage and a positive final solution volume. Select units explicitly. Required mass is reported in grams. Use final solution volume, not the starting solvent volume.

Worked example

900 mg = 0.9 g. For 100 mL final solution: 0.9 ÷ 100 × 100 = 0.9000% w/v. Equivalently, 9 g in 1 L gives 0.9000%. In required-mass mode, a target of 0.9% w/v and final volume of 500 mL gives 4.5 g of solute.

Interpreting the result

A 0.9% w/v solution contains 0.9 g per 100 mL, equivalent to 9 mg/mL.

Assumptions and limitations

This is not percent w/w. The tool does not account for purity, hydration, solubility or volume changes during preparation. Displayed decimal places do not establish measurement accuracy.
